Item Description
Badge is 4.5" overall w/1" cello. Oval is 4x5". Root was a Republican hopeful who had served on the cabinets of McKinley and Roosevelt, and had also served as a U.S. Senator representing New York. He placed third on the first ballot at the 1916 Republican Convention, ultimately losing his bid for the nomination to Charles Evans Hughes. Badge has some faint even age toning on the ribbon, otherwise only light surface wear and handling. Still Exc. Oval was from a dinner held in Root's honor by the Republican Club of New York. Details of the event can be found on the reverse of the portrait. Event held at the Hotel Astor on October 18, 1915. Oval has moderate surface wear and handling. VF. An impressive single-day event item from early in Root's 1916 presidential bid.
