Item Description
9" in length, consisting of brass frame at top holding celluloid insert reading "Boston" and has bar pin on reverse. Attached to this is ribbon reading "Royal Rooters 1915" and attached to that is 2.25" celluloid button w/A.R. Lopez & Bro. of Boston, Mass back paper. Additional attachment of a fabric sock. Impressive design and construction. The button has a portrait of Joseph J. Lannin. On December 21, 1913, Lannin and a group of investors purchased 50% of the Boston Red Sox baseball team from Jimmy McAleer and Robert B. McRoy. In 1914 he became the sole owner of the Red Sox and in that same year he purchased the rights to bring Babe Ruth to Boston resulting in his team winning both the 1915 and 1916 World Series. He sold the team in 1917 to Harry Frazee for $675,000. The 1915 Boston Red Sox, behind a rookie left-handed pitcher named George Herman "Babe" Ruth dominated the American League during the regular season with a record of 101-50 under manager Bill Carrigan. Including Ruth, all five Red Sox starting pitchers won at least 15 games in 1915, while the offense was led by a pair of future National Baseball Hall of Fame outfielders: Tris Speaker and Harry Hooper along with Ruth, during his limited at-bats while on the mound. Boston concluded their superb 1915 season with a World Series victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in five games. Sock has two tiny holes: at top and front center just below the button. But sock retains deep red color. Sock is still VF. All else is Exc., button is glossy. The only other example we've offered in our 56 years was from the Muchinsky Collection. That realized $3,575 in our June 2021 auction but it must be noted that was lesser grade including a faded sock. An exceptional Red Sox item.
