Item Description
In 1908-1909, Robert Peary (1856-1922) mounted his eighth attempt to reach the North Pole. A large expedition, he was joined by frequent companion and fellow explorer Matthew Henson (1866-1955), an African American explorer who may have in fact been the first man at the geographic North Pole. The claim by Peary's team to have reached the North Pole was widely debated in newspapers at the time, despite having been acknowledged by the National Geographic Society. Lot includes signatures of three Arctic explorers - 1.25x2-7/8" clipped signature of Perry, 3-5/8x5.25" clipped inscription/signature of Henson and handwritten letter dated May 11, 1924 from fellow Arctic explorer Robert Bartlett (1875-1946), who led over 40 expeditions to the Arctic (more than anyone else) and had accompanied Peary on a previous trip. Signatures have evenly aged and are VF overall. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOAs/COA.
