Marshall Levin, co-author on Buttons In Sets 1896-1972 (published 1984 and in print), listed the Sandyval buttons as a set of 84. However, there are curl text distinctions so we've separated the 84 into this set of 36 and the following lot into a set of 48. On this set the curl text is "Sandyval Graphics Ltd. New York 10014."
Buttons include - Fred Astaire, Theda Bara, John Barrymore, Wallace Beery, Humphrey Bogart, Humphrey Bogart/Katharine Hepburn, Marlon Brando, Yul Brenner, Charlie Chaplin, Gary Cooper, Jackie Cooper, Joan Crawford, James Dean, Marlene Dietrich, W.C. Fields, Errol Flynn, Clark Gable, Greta Garbo, Judy Garland, Cary Grant, Jean Harlow, Leslie Howard/Norma Shearer, Buster Keaton, King Kong, Charles Laughton, Laurel & Hardy, Peter Lorre, Lon Chaney (as Phantom of the Opera), Groucho Marx, Marilyn Monroe, Laurence Olivier, Edward G. Robinson, Shirley Temple, Rudolph Valentino, John Wayne and Mae West/George Raft.
The following five have small flaws - Astaire .25" cello pull at 3 o'clock edge, Joan Crawford wide 1.25"long split by back collet (clean front) and Fields, Garbo and Wayne have tiny dot or spot of age not very distracting. The other 31 are Exc. Rare as a set and the first we've offered in our 56 years. See next two lots.
