Item Description
Marshall Levin, co-author on Buttons In Sets 1896-1972 (published 1984 and in print), listed the Sandyval buttons as a set of 84. However, there are curl text distinctions so we've separated the 84 into this set of 48 and the previous lot set of 36. Like the previous set,  the curl text is "Sandyval Graphics Ltd. New York 10014" but unlike that set these have curl text reading "PERSONALITY BUTTONS" as well.

Buttons include - Fatty Arbuckle/Buster Keaton, Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers, Humphrey Bogart/Bette Davis, Ray Bolger (as Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz), Joe E. Brown/Ginger Rogers, Frederic March (Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde), Charlie Chaplin (five different), Gary Cooper/Ingrid Bergman, Bette Davis (two different), Marlene Dietrich (two different), W.C. Fields (three different), Clark Gable (two different), Greta Garbo, John Garfield, Jack Haley (as Tin Man from Wizard of Oz), Jean Harlow, William S. Hart, Rita Hayworth (two different), Katharine Hepburn, Boris Karloff/Elsa Lanchester (Bride of Frankenstein), Gene Kelly, Bert Lahr (as Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz), Harold Lloyd (two different), Carole Lombard, Sophia Loren, Bela Lugosi/Helen Chandler (Dracula), Marx Bros., Groucho Marx, Victor McLaglen, Marilyn Monroe (two different), Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland, Rudolph Valentino, Erich von Stroheim, John Wayne and projection slide that reads "If Annoyed When Here - Please Tell The Management."

The following seven have some flaws - Chaplin (wearing bowler hat and vest) has a few age dots, Cooper/Berman has many lt. surface scratches visible in reflected light, Fields (w/o hat) has couple barely visible age dots and vertical surface scratch visible in reflected light, Kelly has age dots around edge, Monroe (Seven Year Itch) has faint aging to bottom edge, Bojangles has 9/16" split on back that creates bump at 3 o'clock area on front. 41 of 48 are VF/Exc. Rare as a set and the first we've offered in our 56 years. See previous and next lots.
