Item Description
3.5" w/metal back and horizontal bar pin. Produced by Frank Allen Specialties in New York City. Gray areas in field are from clear tape used on the design mock up that was photographed for the final sample button. No tape is under the cello and similar areas are on several of the other known examples. Only scattered hairline scratches in reflected light. Exc. as made. Allen made some attempts to colorize this design on other known examples which have poorly executed toning making this high contrast black and white example much above average. John Hillhouse Collection. See additional designs and history in previous two and next lot.

A note from Americana Specialist Scott Mussell: Despite how Joe Kennedy Sr. reportedly felt I have always thought these were among the finest designs from the 1960 campaign and while the Cox & Roosevelt jugate buttons are considered the most highly prized buttons among Presidential campaign material collectors- it is hard for me to imagine that these Kennedy buttons don't rank closely both now and especially in the long run. They are steeped in fascinating history combined with extreme rarity and feature the most iconic candidate of the last half of the 20th century. It is a privilege to bring together these four outstanding buttons and present them to the collecting world for the first time all at once.
