Item Description
17.25x22x4" deep painted polyurethane foam panel created by Industrial Light & Magic's model miniature department c. 1977 for use in the climatic "Trench Run" sequence of the film, which saw Luke Skywalker and other Rebel Alliance pilots fly their Y-Wing and X-Wing Fighters through perilous conditions on the surface of the Death Star, ultimately resulting in Luke's successful destruction of the Death Star. This panel was featured on the sides of the "Trench," one among a series of similar groupings seen interspersed over XX-9 heavy turbolaser batteries firing at the Rebels. Majority of panel is constructed of dense foam with detailed resin surface that has been painted the familiar gray shade seen in the film. Surface has numerous tiny attachments with small reflective spots, likely used for filming purposes. This was part of the larger scale prop constructed for use in filming the "Trench Run," shown in situ as used for filming this iconic scene. There is an approximately 10.5" vertical crack between the first and second columns and entirety of surface exhibits lt. overall aging with small age spotting and dust soiling. Top of first column has spot of dark staining while faint 1.5x2" area of staining is present at top section between first and second columns. Prop has scattered tiny chips/nicks to raised details, more confined to leftmost column, which has some thin slivers off raised border of highest portion of surface. This is also seen to some extent on the exterior edge of the third column. The full Death Star prop used for filming remains in an esteemed Star Wars Collection, and pieces of other parts of the Death Star have come to auction before, but rarely are pieces this large offered, let alone pieces from the "Trench Run" sequence. Fine overall, but still a magnificent example of a prop from this iconic film and a must for any serious Star Wars collection. Due to fragility of item, packing and shipping must be done by a third party. Please contact us w/any shipping rate questions prior to the close of the auction. Can also be picked up in person if so desired.
