Item Description
Worldcon, or more formally the World Science Fiction Convention, is the annual convention of the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS). It has been held each year since 1939 (except during World War II; 1942-1945). The members of each Worldcon are WSFS members who vote to select the winners of the annual Hugo Awards, which are presented at each convention. Offered here is 1.75x2.75" attendance badge for the fifth convention in 1947, held in Philadelphia, PA (where it was called "Philcon I") Aug. 30 to Sept. 1 at the Penn-Sheraton hotel. 200 people attended, one of them Donald Klein, whose name is inked on the offered badge. Badge has "Fifth World Science Fiction Convention" name at top w/ "Philadelphia - 1947" at bottom. Cardboard badge comes in vintage plastic sleeve w/bar pin reverse and is evenly aged. VF overall. Given the low attendance for this convention, few such badges were issued and even fewer were saved. Rare and first we've seen in our 56 years. An early artifact in the world of pop culture conventions.
