Item Description
The term photoart applies to photographs that have been modified or enhanced in some way - usually using airbrushed paint effects - for use as the masters for mass-produced printed images. During the 1980s and 1990s, this was common practice for toy packaging and action figure card backs. Offered here is 20x23" mat containing photoart from cardback for the first and second series of Kenner's The Dark Knight Collection, released in 1990-1991 after the blockbuster success of Tim Burton's 1989 Batman movie. Photoart is on 16x19-7/8" sheet of Kodak photo paper that has been matted to 14x17" and shows Jack Nicholson as The Joker. Photo paper has been professionally airbrushed, w/dark bkg. having pink/peach/purple highlights added. This photoart image of Nicholson appeared on the front of various action figure packaging of the few different Joker action figures produced for this line, alongside the black and gold batsymbol and "Batman" movie logo. Of note, this art was more closely cropped on the final product packaging. Slight outline can be seen around Joker's head, likely from use of paint mask applied for airbrushing. Photo paper has been attached to mat's back w/two pieces of paper tape at top corners. Lower purple portion of Joker's coat has some scattered fingerprints, which do not distract greatly. Main image area has slight fade, w/margin edges displaying somewhat more vibrant color as matted, but main art image still displays VF. Matching photoart featuring Michael Keaton as Batman was also produced (see previous lot).
