Item Description
8x11" on thick stock. Features full body portrait of George Edwin Taylor. Facsimile inscription in lower right corner reads "Very Truly, Geo. E. Taylor". Additional text to the left reads "Standard Bearer of National Liberty Party for President, U.S.A. 1904" and "Notice:- The only Negro who ever made the race for President". Moderate surface wear and handling, most notably toning seen in lower left corner and some scattered scratches on portrait. VF.
Taylor was born into slavery in 1857 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He moved to Wisconsin and resided there until 1891, where he was heavily involved in the labor movement. After that time he moved to Iowa, where he served as president of the National Colored Men's Protective Association and the National Negro Democratic League. In 1904 he was nominated as the presidential candidate for the National Liberty Party, becoming the first African American to receive a presidential nomination. He eventually moved to Florida, where he died in 1925.
