Item Description
1-5/8" oval w/W&H back paper. Pictured are "Hon. Marcus Garvey" and an early version of the United Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League flag. This button was used during the first "U.N.I.A. And A.C.L." National Convention occurring August 1-31, 1920 at Madison Square Garden. There is an all but flat crack line from below the N at upper left, across his forehead and between his eyes and ending of the left side just above the middle of the flag design. The rest of the button is clean and glossy save a faint tiny mark at both the extreme left and right, barely detectable.  A rare and important artifact of Garvey, Pan-Africanism, and the African American experience in America. About three known.
