Item Description
33x46-5/8" poster on thin stock w/program details on back. Designed by Gunther Keiser for the 1969 German tour w/"Design: Kieser Portratfoto: Silverstein Farbfoto: Novo Studio" credit at center of right edge. Featured in The Art of Rock as plate #3.185. A litany of varieties of this iconic design exist, including the smaller and more often seen variety sold on the 1969 American tour that features "Darian House" credit in lower white margin. Not to be confused w/the merchandising posters from the American tour, this larger and much rarer example was for the 1969 German tour for which Keiser's design was originally produced. This specimen was issued as a "Poster-Programm" w/additional text on back that translates to "In this folded form it serves as concert information. Unfolded at home, it is also the original poster in DIN A0 format for the Jimi Hendrix Experience concert tour." While some blank back varieties were produced featuring single and multiple dates as well as tour blanks intended for use on bus enclosures, those examples are exceedingly rare and most of the few survivors have serious condition issues given the extremely thin and fragile paper they were printed on. These program varieties, printed on slightly thicker paper, are also very rare and are the same large size as the blank back examples. Folded as issued and intended to be sold on the German tour dates, poster shows just lt. wear at top and middle fold crease intersections and is still a bright and clean example. Some lt. scattered handling wear but still VF/Exc. overall. The design is considered artist Gunther Keiser's masterpiece and a treasure of the concert poster medium. Stunning size, bold color and iconic design combine to make this one of the most attractive images of the era and certainly in the top five Hendrix poster images. Once framed this will be the focal point of any collection. In our March 2023 auction, we sold another example of this poster in similar condition, selling for a record price of $18,561, which brought this example to us for auction.
