Item Description
3.25x5.75". 1864. Envelope from Thaddeus Stevens and addressed to a "Mrs. Simon Stevens". Moderate handling wear, most notably in upper right corner. Traces of soil in center of envelope. Some paper loss on reverse on seal flap from when envelope was originally opened. Good. Stevens was a Congressman from Pennsylvania and one of the staunchest opponents of slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War. He fought for the civil rights of African Americans during Reconstruction as part of the Radical Republican coalition in the House. Comes w/ JSA COA and Hake's COA.
