Item Description
5.25x8.25". Dated March 31, 1870. On "New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company" stationery. Addressed to "Hon. John Sherman; Ch. Finance Committtee; U.S. Senate." Letter pertains to a petition concerning a "duty on steel rails." Vanderbilt was a business magnate who made his fortune in the steamboat and railroad industries. Sherman would later serve as Secretary of the Treasury under Rutherford Hayes. Body of letter not penned in Vanderbilt's hand. Moderate handling, most notably, minor crease in upper left corner. Extremely Fine. Comes w/JSA LOA.
