Item Description
4.25x6.75". On "JG" stationery. Dated September 19, 1878. Penned in Gould's hand. Letter reads "Mr. Grosvenor of Athens, Ohio called today on behalf of the State Rep. Committee for aid and I think he will be able to raise all the funds he thinks necessary-Ohio ought to be redeemed-I trust will be." Charles H. Grosvenor was on the Republican State Committee in Ohio and also served as the Speaker of the House for the Ohio legislature following the 1878 elections. The redemption that Gould is likely referring to was to take control away from the Democratic Party in the Ohio General Assembly and give Republicans majority in the state legislative body, which did occur after the 1878 elections. Some ink bleeding, otherwise light handling. Extremely Fine. Comes w/JSA LOA.
