Item Description
6.5x8.25". Blank back on rag paper. Anti-Madison handbill song sheet referencing the siege of Washington during the War of 1812, "Our Capitol You've Lost, Jim" and Madison's escape "You Dastardly Did Sneak Away, James Madison, By Joe". Includes scathing indictments of Madison "While British troops were feasting on wine and ale you know; You weary, fled to seek a bed, James Madison, by Joe." Also makes reference to Napoleon and Thomas Jefferson, w/a suggestion that Madison and Jefferson should seek asylum on Elba, Napoleon's place of exile, "Great Rufus Shall Supplant You, And He Shall Rule In Stile, While You And Tom, Find Asylum, On Little Elba's Isle". This reference to "Rufus" King indicates this is likely a c. 1816 Federalist campaign piece. King was the de facto Federalist nominee, as the party's sway nationally fizzled, and owns the distinction as the last Federalist to run for the Presidency. King lost handily to James Monroe, a student of Jefferson and Madison's Sec. of State. A .5" horizontal tear in left margin not affecting text. Otherwise moderate handling, even age toning and w/a few tiny scattered stains. Fine. Material from the 1816 campaign is almost non-existent, that rarity combined w/the rhetoric present on this handbill song sheet make it an important piece of Presidential campaign history. We could not find an example offered in commerce and this is the sole survivor we have encountered in our 56 years.
