Item Description
7/8" w/toned Eagle Regalia, NYC. back paper. Image of hands pulling open jail bars in front of figures of African Americans at the bottom. Age toning at edges blending evenly, otherwise light wear. Extremely Fine. Issued by the International Labor Defense (ILD) to help fund the cost of legal defense. The ILD was the legal arm of the Communist party who became involved when the NAACP moved slowly fearing an impact to effectiveness in the face of the sensational charges. For two decades after the Scottsboro Boys were falsely accused of gang raping two white women, they were embattled in the court system of Alabama fighting for their lives. One of the results after years of trials, retrials, convictions and reversals was Southern juries became more open to African Americans. The case is an important early domino in the Civil Rights movement and a glaring representation of the injustices African Americans faced.
