Item Description
Elaborate 6-7/8x-12.75" souvenir trifold menu folder w/interior trifold menu sheet for "Dinner To General Horace Porter" held June 17, 1902 at the Lotos Club in New York, NY. Horace Porter (1837-1921) was a soldier and diplomat who served as aide-de-camp to General Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War as well as the US Ambassador to France from 1897 to 1905. This dinner was attended by Porter's fellow members of the Lotos Club, a private social club in New York City and printed menu features Porter's photo and has been signed by him in black ink on third panel. Six others have signed in pencil below this, including author Mark Twain (1835-1902) and fellow Civil War generals Daniel Sickles (1918-1914), John R. Brooke (1838-1926), Rear Admiral Albert S. Barker (1843-1916) and two others. Outer folder shows some wear w/corner creases and spot of staining at top left. Fine. Interior menu is evenly aged and has 2" archival tape repair to split at bottom of left vertical fold line, but remains VF overall w/nice signatures. Comes w/JSA LOA.
