Item Description
6-3/8x7.25x8.5" tall illustrated cardboard box contains 7.5" tall figural speaker, molded and painted to look like Glenn Strange's portrayal of Frankenstein's Monster from the Universal horror movies of the 1940s. Made by Actwell Plastics Corp. based on sculpting by Clinton Plastics (aka Clint Toys), ©1964 Universal Pictures Co., Inc. Box features images of the speaker itself, noting that it "Plugs Into: Table Radios, Phonographs, Transistor Radios" and that it "Connects To Auto Radios For Use As Rear Deck Speaker." These suggested uses are illustrated via inset scenes, including "At The Beach!" scene with tanning beauty listening to tunes. Classic 1960s Frankenstein illustration is repeated on all sides. Box is complete and in its original state with no repairs or restoration. Box exhibits lt. even aging and has some tape staining at top/bottom as once sealed. Scattered edge/corner tip wear with .5" and 1.25" tears to edges at lid hinge. 2.75" corner split to bottom of left side panel. Top inner flap has .75x.75" corner tip off with 1.25" tear. Some lt. scattered moisture staining and surface paper wear to bottom panel. Box retains its shape and remains Fine for display purposes. Top of speaker's "head" has wire mesh covering over quality 3" dia. speaker unit of the era. Original 20' cord with two input jacks and three unused adhesive pads (for securing wires) included as is 5-7/8x8.5" typed instruction sheet including "Instructions For Car Installation" has even moderate aging and shows some lt. handling wear with tiny corner tip off upper left. VF. Speaker itself shows some scattered paint wear to hair and raised areas, including the prominent brow of Frankenstein's Monster, chin and nose, which shows the most wear and has two very minor indents to plastic. Dust soiling to inner portion of speaker, but still displays VF. Originally obtained for $4.95 plus 60¢ shipping, these radios were advertised in popular monster magazines of the era, like the clean copy of Famous Monsters Of Filmland #31 (Dec. 1964) included with lot. A true holy grail on 1960s monster collectibles, this speaker is rarely seen, let alone complete with its original box, and this is the first of either we have offered in our 56 years. This is a monster item missing from even some of the most advanced collections. Fill the void now as another opportunity to obtain an example of this stature may not come anytime soon, if ever.
