Item Description
13x16" sheet of animation paper w/graphite original art showing small figure of Superman punching death ray (back of sheet has pencil outline of Superman matching that seen on front). Art was used as "Rendering Guide" (as noted by pencil notation at top) and storyboard for 1941 Superman cartoon, aka The Mad Scientist. This was the first of nine shorts produced by the Fleischer Studios (w/a further eight shorts being produced by Famous Studios) for Paramount Studios. This first short was released Sept. 26, 1941. Additional margin pencil notes include "Sc. # 83" and "Bkg From Sc 61." Pin holes along margins w/vertical crease at center and horizontal crease crossing one of Superman's ankles; sheet shows moderate handling wear and scattered dust soiling. Fine overall. Production artwork from these iconic animated shorts rarely come up for sale and as such are highly coveted by animation collectors, let alone an action-packed image of Superman from his very first cartoon such as that offered here. Historic and rare Superman animation art. Harry Matetsky Collection.
