Item Description
16x24" Masonite board features 14.25x21.5" image area done in oils by Owen Kampen (1912-1982), an illustrator noted for his work during the 1950s and 1960s, painting covers for many paperback publishers. Art was published as the cover to Nothing So Strange by James Hilton, unique to the edition published by Avon as part of their "Pocket-Size Books" line (No. 381) in 1951. Per the cover synopsis inside the included paperback, art "Shows Jane And Brad In The California Desert Where He Overcomes His Neurosis - And Where She Realizes That He Is In Love With Her." Kampen has signed art at lower left. Handwritten title at top/bottom margins. Masonite board shows obvious edge wear w/heavy wear to top right corner, which appears to have had repair. Top center of image area has .5" hole and bottom center of image area has 18" hole w/small paint flake off. Art appears to have been varnished and has some faint streaking. VG overall. Kampen's cover art does not come up for sale often.
