Item Description
7.75x9.75". Letter addressed to "J. L. Edwards, Esq." Dated February 17, 1835. Edwards was a lawyer appointed as the first Commissioner of Pensions in 1833, a position within the War Department. The letter regards an application relating to a pension, w/Bell following up w/Edwards on the status of the paperwork. John Bell was Speaker of the House of Representatives at this time in 1835, and would go on to serve as Secretary of War, a U.S. Senator, and the 1860 Constitutional Union candidate for president. Entire letter is in Bell's hand, w/"House of Repr." at top. Scattered faint staining, most notably along bottom edge in center. Otherwise moderate handling. VF. Comes w/JSA LOA.
