Item Description
The 1887 N284 Buchner Gold Coin baseball card set was produced by D. Buchner & Company of New York and distributed with Gold Coin chewing tobacco. The front of the cards features a colorful drawing of a baseball scene which bears no correlation to the players on the card.  Printed on the bottom of the card is the player's name, position and team name. The backs of the N284 set include an advertising message from Gold Coin chewing tobacco.

John Ward, known as Monte Ward, was an American Major League Baseball pitcher, shortstop, second baseman, third baseman, manager, executive, union organizer, owner and author. Ward, of English descent, was born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania and grew up in Renovo, Pennsylvania. He led the formation of the first professional sports players union and a new baseball league, the Players' League. Some career highlights include NL wins leader in 1879, NL ERA leader in 1878. NL strikeout leader in 1879, NL Stolen base leader in 1887 & 1892 and pitched a perfect game on 6/17/1880. John Ward was inducted into the National Baseball Hall Of Fame in 1964.
