Item Description
1.25" w/great image of eight Brownies around snow-accented section of fencing serving as a monthly calendar. Other than the Yellow Kid this is the earliest button to picture comic characters. This scarce monthly calendar series of various designs is from the inventor of the celluloid covered button and was introduced November 1896 or earlier and lasted through November 1897 or later. Has W&H name and address visible on bottom edge and complete with a full color floral "Compliments Of The Whitehead & Hoag Co." back paper. No name of creator Palmer Cox but this and the following two lots are the only button designs we know of to depict accurate likenesses of his characters. Three seen but only this one example has the back paper. Cello is NM. Rare.
