Item Description
Lot of five from 1940-1943. The Shield, was one of the most popular comic book heroes of the 1940s, fighting to protect the American way of life in a patriotic costume that made him invulnerable. In fact, The Shield was the first hero to wear such a costume, introduced in "Pep Comics" #1 in 1940, pre-dating Captain America by over a year. The Shield also appeared in "Shield-Wizard Comics" between 1940 and 1944 and the character's popularity gave rise to The Shield G-Man Club. All four celluloid items in this lot feature the classic image of The Shield bending a metal beam w/"Truth - Justice - Patriotism - Courage" code and "Shield G-Man Club" name at top. The first of the three buttons is larger 1.75" size and was only used during the first year of the club in 1940 resulting in the rarity of this larger example. Next is 1.5" and the rarest of the four. We have only offered this version three times in our 57 years. Final button is the more commonly seen 1.25" size. Final item is a 1" badge w/bar pin on back. The 1.5" has a few tiny age dots on rim. The 1.25" has moderate oxidation to metal back. All fronts remain bright and glossy. Overall still VF and an instant collection. Harry Matetsky Collection.
