Item Description
11.25x16-7/8" DC Comics Sparta artboard features pen and ink original art for unused cover to Detective Comics #481 (Jan. 1979) by Jim Aparo (1932-2005). While final published cover featured a "Batman Family" design by Jim Starlin and Tatjana Wood, longtime Batman artist Aparo's take featured Batman clutching the hands of large clock as the Grim Reaper swipes at him w/scythe, the Reaper's reflection visible in the clock's face. Lower right has inset box w/image for proposed Hawkman backup story. This is the first issue of Detective Comics featuring stories originally prepared for the canceled Batman Family title. Due to the last minute decision of merging the titles, a new cover became a necessity. Top margin has printed "Detective" title w/inked issue number and publication date. Upper left margin has printer job inkstamp w/inked date. Back of artboard has photocopy of title logo of the era and number inkstamps included DC copyright and one noting "Written Off." Pin holes at top left corner, but art remains clean and Exc. overall. Wonderful example of what might've been from one of Batman's most popular Bronze Age artists.
