Item Description
1.75". No maker. This is the 1939 NL Champs button repurposed by the manufacturer who simply added a 1940 decal over the 1939 date, thus allowing them to save money and liquidate already existing buttons from the previous year.
Trace of oxidation to metal back. Front bright and glossy. Exc. Much scarcer than the unaltered 1939 version. Paul Muchinsky Collection.

The 1940 Cincinnati Reds won their second consecutive National League pennant with a record of 100-53 under National Baseball Hall of Fame manager Bill McKechnie. Leading the offensive and defensive responsibilities was future HOF catcher, Ernie Lombardi. Cincinnati would go on to win the 1940 World Series in seven games over the Detroit Tigers.
