Item Description
Only example known to Hake's. Large 2.5" button w/curl naming maker Philadelphia Badge Co. Text from top to bottom reads: Sunday May 10/Negro American League Opening Day Rickwood Field/Birmingham Black Barons vs. Jacksonville Red Cap. All printed over a baseball desgin w/stitches in blue. Single day issue button promoting the opening day doubleheader which took place at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, AL.

Birmingham manager, W. S. Welch selected one of black baseball's preeminent hurlers, Dan Bankhead for the opening game start. The Black Barons line-up featured: Davenport (CF), Morney (RF), Bradford (LF), Sampson (2B), Lockett (3B), Mathews (1B), Hardy (C), Markham (SS) & Bankhead (P). Jacksonville line-up included: Ray (CF), Woods (3B), Cleveland (RF), Andrews (LF), Smith (C), Turner (1B), Robinson (2B), Lamar (SS) & Henry (P). The Black Barons would go on to finish in third place in the Negro American League with/a record of 14-10 while the Red Caps would finish in fifth place with a 2-6 record before disbanding midway through the season.

Button has heavy and obvious wear and aging. This includes all over staining to the front and all over surface rust to the metal back. Dispite this, front still retains a very glossy surface and all color is strong, no fading. However, button is sold as is. But this is a rare case in which rarity trumps condition. A similar opening day button, this one from a 1941  game between the N.Y. Black Yankees and the Philadelphia Stars (albeit in Exc. condition) sold in our Feb. 2021 auction for $1,531.  Paul Muchinsky Collection.
