Item Description
5.5" overall w/1.75" double-sided cello. Designation on hanger reads "Life Member". Text on ribbon reads "Muskogee 1914". Front of cello features portrait of Washington, while reverse depicts a bee's nest w/additional text surrounding it reading "Object-to promote the commercial and financial development of the negro." Washington was one of the leaders of the early civil rights movement of the late 19th and early 20th century. This emphasis on commercial and financial development of African Americans fell directly in line w/Washington's approach to civil rights, which prioritized economic development first, believing social and political freedom and equality could follow. Washington's approach clashed w/his contemporaries, namely W. E. B. DuBois, who asserted that full social and political equality must be demanded, which he believed, in turn, would allow for economic and other freedoms. A few areas of thinness in ribbon, most notably above "Muskogee" on white stripe. Otherwise only light wear. Overall extremely Fine.
