Item Description
1.25" button pair. Both produced by Phila. Badge Co. Matched set Hon. Marcus Garvey "Provisional President of Africa" & Hon. J.W.H. Eason "President of America U.N.I.A." portrait buttons, likely produced around the Madison Square Garden convention in 1920. Despite being brought into the Universal Negro Improvement Association by Garvey, James Eason quickly became a thorn in the divisive leader's side. Accused of both theft against the organization and improprieties by a female choir singer, Eason was actually impeached by the 1922 convention. When Garvey was brought up on mail fraud charges through his Black Star Line shipping company, Eason was set to be the primary prosecution witness. On January 2nd, 1923 James Eason was shot twice in a New Orleans alley. Though widely believed to be an assassination ordered by Garvey, he was never charged. Garvey button is Exc. Eason has large air mark along bottom two thirds of button and a tan stain on hairline. VG.
