Item Description
20x30" on thin coarse stock. Promoting a concert on Fri. May 15 in the London Borough of Richmond on a small island located on the River Thames. The Eel Pie Island Hotel was built in the 19th century, hosted ballroom dancing in the 1920s and 1930s and served as a concert venue in the 1960s featuring many of England's rising starts (Rolling Stones, The Who, The Yardbirds, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton w/John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) but was shuttered in 1967. By 1969 the hotel space had been taken over by an anarchist's hippie commune that soon grew to be the largest in London. Early in 1969 the ballroom experienced a brief renaissance as a concert venue under the name Colonel Barefoot's Rock Garden w/shows promoted largely towards the West London communities. This early Sabbath show occurred in this most unusual space while they toured in support of their first self-titled record, now widely considered the birth of heavy metal. Only a few weeks after this show Sabbath entered the studio to bang out their legendary follow up Paranoid. Short horizontal tear along left edge repaired by archival tape on verso. Minor edge crumpling, corner creases and moderate handling. Fine. Impressive graphics and a historically early gig make this a standout Sabbath artifact.
