Item Description
33x46-5/8" poster on thin stock w/program details on verso. Text "Design: Kieser Portratfoto: Silverstein Farbfoto: Novo Studio" credit at center of right edge. Featured in The Art of Rock as plate #3.185. This iconic design was produced by renowned artist Gunther Keiser for Hendrix's 1969 German tour. It has long been held as one of the premier designs for any artist of the psychedelic era. The image is so beloved that a litany of varieties exists, including a smaller and more frequently seen variety sold on the 1969 American tour that carries a "Darian House" credit in lower white margin. The present offering is not to be confused with the merchandising posters from the American tour, this rarer full size variety carries text on back "Poster-Programm" and additional German text translating to "In this folded form it serves as concert information. Unfolded at home, it is also the original poster in DIN A0 format for the Jimi Hendrix Experience concert tour" indicating it was intended for distribution during the 1969 German tour for which the design was originally produced. While some blank back varieties were produced featuring single and multiple dates as well as tour blanks intended for use on bus enclosures, those examples are exceedingly rare and most of the few survivors have serious condition issues given the 'onion skin' thin and fragile paper they were printed on. These program varieties, printed on slightly thicker paper, are also very rare and are the same large size as the blank back examples. Folded as issued and intended to be sold on German tour dates, poster shows only lt. wear along top edge with typical tiny holes at crease intersections and overall lt. scattered handling wear. Still Exc. overall. Stunning size, bold color and iconic design combine to make this one of the most attractive images of the era. Once framed this will be the focal point of any collection. The few examples that have come to commerce have consistently sold above $10,000. The design is considered artist Gunther Keiser's masterpiece and a treasure of the concert poster medium.
