Item Description
20x30" illustration board mounted to foamcore features mixed media original art (unused) for front cover of box for VHS release of The Adventures Of Young Indiana Jones: The Phantom Train Of Doom. The Adventures Of Young Indiana Jones was a series of made-for-television films based on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles TV show, both starring Sean Patrick Flanery in the title role. The tenth film in The Adventures Of Young Indiana Jones, it saw Indiana Jones lead a band of elderly commandos across war-torn Africa in search of powerful, train-borne weapon. Art was created by noted movie poster artist Drew Struzan, who had provided poster art for every Indiana Jones movie released at that point (and beyond). Art exhibits Struzan's detailed, yet stylized style Indiana Jones fans had come to expect, w/images of Flanery along w/co-star Tom Bell as Colonel Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. A group of African warriors charge above image of the train, which bears an immense railway gun. Of note, Mike Butkus also created art for this release (see lot #1286), which was ultimately used for the VHS release over the art offered in this lot. While visually similar in content, Struzan's art differs from Butkus's in a number of ways, the most evident being Struzan's art being depicted in a closed panel (w/bottom of motorcycle tires appearing as unfinished pencils) w/wide margins whereas Butkus's art filled the entire board. Other differences include Indy being depicted w/wilder hair and slightly different eyes as well as very slight size differences w/the other figures and more of the African warriors' legs being shown. Art features beautiful use of color and has been signed just above railway gun. Some scattered edge wear to board w/smudge at lower right in margin area; not affecting art, which remains Exc. Art is covered by acetate overlay attached at top w/attached paper overlay having "Original Art - Fragile - Please Handle Respectfully" inkstamp. Both paper overlay and back of foamcore bears handwritten Young Indiana Jones name w/"Phantom Train Of Doom" handwritten title in black marker.
