Item Description
Large and impressive 26.25x35.75x1" thick custom shaped wood frame (w/edges designed to look like an old comic book) features high quality silkscreen of the cover to "All-American Comics" #88 (Aug. 1947), featuring the Golden Age Green Lantern bursting through a painting as artist shoots at him w/machine gun. Green Lantern's sidekick Doiby Dickles distracts another criminal artist by tossing artist's palette into his face. Silkscreen was printed by Master Printer Gary Lichtenstein (who was Peter Max's printer). Silkscreen was then adhered to the shaped wood frame. Silkscreen was then painted by Golden Age comic artist Irwin Hasen (1918-2015). Center portion of frame has added back section that presents secondary surface, which has been covered w/collage of Golden Age Green Lantern comic book panels, making display look as if the bkg. is page within "comic" display. This is further enhanced by three-dimensional image of Green Lantern "bursting" forth from the painting, just like on the comic cover. Hasen and artist Dan Makara then worked together to give the art display a distressed, well-read look, as if an actual comic book from the 1940s. This look was attained by creases and ripples to silkscreen and at edges, w/some simulated splits at top/bottom of left edge's "spine" and aging effects added for good measure. This is one of just three examples produced by Hasen and Makara. Exc.
