Item Description
Presented here is a unique and historical image depicting the two greatest players in New York Yankees history at the height of their supremacy. The 1927 New York Yankees, with their line-up forever remembered as "Murderer's Row", are widely regarded as the greatest team in MLB history. Leading the offensive onslaught that season was the greatest power hitter of the era, Babe Ruth, who swatted a then MLB record 60 home runs while teammate Lou Gehrig was right behind him, amassing a total of 47 long balls. Following their AL pennant and subsequent demolition of the NL's Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1927 World Series, Ruth and Gehrig embarked on the most famous cross-country barnstorming tour in baseball history, known as the Bustin' Babes and Larrupin' Lous Tour. Spanning a period of nearly three weeks, the duo took on all comers across the entire United States from Providence, RI to Los Angeles, CA. These wildly popular exhibition games acted as fundraisers with all proceeds from the ticket sales going to benefit several notable charities. Photo is 4.75x6.75". Only the slightest trace of handling wear. Remains bright, clean and glossy. An exceptional example w/strong, bold image. While a number of different images from this historic tour have sold at auction over the past decade, we have been unable to locate another example authenticated by PSA/DNA as a Type I image while picturing only the two Yankee icons, Ruth & Gehrig, side-by-side without any other individuals included in the photograph. A similar but not identical image of the barnstorming duo has come up for auction on a couple of different occasions and includes copies of their signatures within the image, thus making them Type 3 photographs by definition and excluding them from rivaling our offering here, which we believe to be the finest example extant. For those who collect original photos of Babe Ruth and/or Lou Gehrig, this is certainly one that is a must-have and surely a centerpiece of any pre-war baseball photography collection. Offered at auction for the first time and from The Richard Merkin Collection.
