Item Description

Striking image of the Iron Horse taken during the peak of his New York Yankees career during the late 1920s. Lou Gehrig spent his entire playing career w/the Yankees from 1923-39, protecting the Babe for most of those years, batting clean-up for the vaunted "Murderer's Row" line-up. In addition to his then-record total of 2,130 consecutive games played, Lou would finish his career with a batting average of .340 along with 493 home runs, 1,995 RBI's and 1,888 runs scored. Gehrig was a two-time AL MVP, Triple Crown winner, seven-time All-Star and seven-time World Series champion. Lou was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. Photo is 8x10". Minor trace of handling wear, small bit of writing on the back. Front remains glossy w/bold and sharp image. Type III designation, meaning that it was produced from a duplicate negative within an approximate two-year period from the time that the image was taken. The c. 1920s dating by PSA makes this one of Gehrig's finest and earliest portraits and provides the collector w/the opportunity to acquire this example for less than the cost of an identical Type I, if one of those even exists. Offered at auction for the first time and from The Richard Merkin Collection.
