Item Description
3.5x5.5". This postcard series was produced by a Canton, Ohio knife company and closely resembles the 1910 PC796 sepia postcards series except that these display ornate borders surrounding the player portrait or action pose. This issue was originally catalogued as a 1907-09 series but recent research has uncovered a correct release date of 1910. Honus Wagner, nicknamed "The Flying Dutchman" for his superb base stealing ability, began his illustrious career with the Louisville Colonels in 1897 before shifting over to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1900 along with a number of his Louisville teammates. Honus would star for the Pirates for the next 18 seasons before ending his playing career in 1917. The Flying Dutchman would lead the National League in batting average an amazing eight times and won his sole World Series championship in 1909 besting the Detroit Tigers and his contemporary rival, Ty Cobb, 4 games to 3. Wagner received the ultimate honor by becoming an inaugural member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame class in 1936. The lower grade is largely due to a 1" dia. spot on the back center with some staining and surface paper loss. However, back remains unused. Front has tiny trace of corner tip/margin wear but eye appeal greatly exceeds the PSA grade and with no significant defects seen to the naked eye. Front remains bright and clean with sharp image. PSA census indicates a total of only five of these cards ever graded by PSA, making this one of Wagner's scarcest career contemporary cards. A key card in the set. Recently graded and fresh to the market.
