Item Description
Large 20x30" Bainbridge board features mixed media original art that was published in MAD Magazine #231 in June 1982. Art is by longtime MAD cartoonist Al Jaffee (1921-2023) and shows MAD mascot Alfred E. Neuman as magician under elaborate "A MAD Magic Trick" marquee. Of note, Neuman's face is printed cut-out that has been pasted onto art as designed. Text block stat at upper left reads "What Remarkable Trick Did You Learn From This Magazine?" Opposite corner shows painted image illustrating how fold Fold-In. Text Block at bottom reveals answer when folded, reading "MAD's Magic Is So Obvious. Everyone From Hulking Nincompoops To Outright Geniuses In Our Society Can See It. You, However, May View Its Contents Disapprovingly. You Might Get Sore And Want To Tear Down The Dastardly Magazine That Manipulates Your Brain" w/folded image revealing a dime, nickel, quarter and fifty cent piece going down the drain. Jaffee has signed at lower right. Image area measures 13x17.25". Top and bottom areas are pasted onto board w/additional pasted text stats. Image area has been taped off, w/some extra paint visible at right. Bottom margin has inked title and issue number along w/"Cover IV" note. Board has some scattered glue staining and soiling. Aged strip of tape at top right. Comes w/separate acetate overlay w/rubylith sections at top corners. Fine/VF overall, but image area remains clean and Exc. Nice example of one of MAD's most iconic features by one of the MADdest of the MAD staff. These Fold-Ins did not often feature Alfred E. Neuman, making this an prime example to have.
