Item Description
August (Ad) Carter created this long running strip with a multitude of kid characters. Sadly, as a child he was with his mother as she was killed by a Baltimore streetcar. Ad's creation years later of the Just Kids Safety Club with the rule of looking both ways before crossing a street was in response to his mother's death. Just Kids hit character merchandising in a big way in the 1930s with the daily and Sunday strips read by millions across the nation. In Hake/Levin Buttons In Sets (1984) listed are 42 different newspapers as club sponsors, 11 different characters and 18 picture variations. The 33 buttons offered here focus on different characters and pictures, not on the newspaper names. However, these 33 do include seven different newspapers including five characters from the very scarce Montreal Herald. The photo shows the group of 33 arranged by character name and here are the rarity highlights in that order. Condition wise- six show slight age, 27 are glossy VF-NM. Rarities: Row 1 Fatso no newspaper name, Grandpop from Sun-Gazette; Row 2 #2 an example of Montreal plus four others; Row 3 #5 Sergeant Branner, no newspaper name, Row 4 #4 Pop no name, Seraphim O'Toole Sun-Gazette; Row 5 #1 Pat Finnegan Sun-Gazette, #3 and 4 both w/serial number for movie theaters "Audubon" and "Embassy"- both light age; Row #6 #5 Marjory in a yellow dress on yellow bkg. The most extensive character and picture variation collection ever assembled- 40 years in the making.
