Item Description
This kit is from the first year of issue - 1939. Original envelope w/"Supermen Of America" return address and typed recipient name/address shows scattered wear/aging w/a few small stains on front. Fine. 5.5x8-3/8" welcome letter notes contents of kit and featuring classic image of Superman breaking chains. Postscript mentions six DC comic titles - Detective Comics, Adventure Comics, More Fun Comics, Flash Comics, All American Comics and New York World's Fair Comics. Bottom has two small spots of staining and letter shows scattered handling wear. Still VF overall. Certificate and membership kits for this club were issued in many different configurations from 1939 to 1965 (see following lots), including varieties issued during the first year. Certificate notates this as being from the first version from the first year, w/fully printed 1939 date at bottom w/inked date and "8988" issue number. A later version just has "19" printed w/the other two numbers to be filled in when issued. There are also other versions from the first year w/a 1939 copyright at bottom margin. Certificate has typed member name/age/address (which matches that on envelope) on provided lines. Horizontal fold at center as issued. Text in body of certificate mentions "Action Comics." Certificate has some handling wear but is o/w VF. Cardstock "Superman's Secret Code" decoder folder w/faint recipient name/address (again matching that on envelope) in pencil used to decipher "Superman's Secret Message" in each issue of Action Comics. Front has iconic image of Superman breaking chains and back has different text/code than on later issues. Folded as issued w/some handling wear. Fine/VF. 1.25" dia. button features color image of Superman w/very dark blue uniform and surrounded by yellow rim w/red lettering. This is the earliest of several identical and/or similar designs issued over several decades. Glossy and Exc. Early and historic. Harry Matetsky Collection.
