Item Description
6.5" tall. Transfer features three colonial figures rallying around a pole w/a "Liberty" cap atop and additional text below "Civil And Religious Liberty To All Mankind". While the three figures are likely generic Colonials they bear a striking resemblance to Washington, Jefferson and Hamilton. Scattered small chips and staining along top and bottom edges. Fine. A rare survivor w/no restoration. A stirring transfer providing a window into the roots of the fight for American independence. The lower quotation is reported to have been from a raucous dinner in New York given in honor of the Continental Congress, American Army and the late Gen. Richard Montgomery who had perished Dec. 1775 during the invasion of Quebec. Reports of 31 toasts concluding w/Washington reportedly saying "To 'Civil and religious liberty to all mankind'-mankind, that is, except Tories." Rex & Patti Stark Collection.
