Item Description
Kit includes original window envelope w/"Supermen Of America" return address. Envelope shows obvious wear w/tape repairs and missing pieces to edges on back. VG. 5.5x8-3/8" welcome letter notes contents of kit and featuring classic image of Superman breaking chains. Postscript mentions "Superman Also Appears In World's Finest Comics And Jimmy Olsen Comics. And His Adventures As A Boy Appear In Superboy And Adventure Comics." Scattered aging w/pair of horizontal and vertical folds. Fine overall. Certificate and membership kits for this club were issued in many different configurations from 1939 to 1965 (see previous and following lots). Certificate has 1960 "National Comics Publications, Inc." copyright at bottom, bears "522069" issue number and has typed member name/age/address (which matches that on decoder folder) on provided lines. This version of the certificate (as well as the welcome letter) mentions "Action Comics" at end. Horizontal fold at center as issued. Faint ring of rust soiling at lower left from button but o/w VF/Exc. Cardstock "Superman's Secret Code" decoder folder (used to decipher "Superman's Secret Message" in each issue of Action Comics) has iconic image of Superman breaking chains and back has text/code. Decoder bears 1961 "National Periodical Publications, Inc." copyright, making this a rare transitional kit and one of the final issued before all contents were switched to all 1961 contents. Folded as issued w/neatly inked matching name/address on provided lines. Exc. 1.25" dia. button w/1961 copyright features color image of Superman. Bright, glossy and NM. Harry Matetsky Collection.
