Item Description
The Shield was one of the most popular comic book heroes of the 1940s, fighting to protect the American way of life in a patriotic costume that made him invulnerable. In fact, The Shield was the first hero to wear such a costume, introduced in Pep Comics #1 in 1940, pre-dating Captain America by over a year. The Shield also appeared in Shield-Wizard Comics between 1940 and 1944 and the character's popularity gave rise to The Shield G-Man Club. Offered here is a complete four-piece kit. Rare mailing envelope w/MLJ Magazines Inc. return address (and typed recipient name/address) has scattered handling wear w/small hole at return address. Fine. Envelope is very rare. 2x3.5" membership card has typed member's name (which differs that on envelope) and actual ink-signed name of The Shield's alter ego (Joe Higgins) as issued. Card has even lt. aging and ring of wear from included button. This includes some tiny oxidized spots. Fine overall. Button is 1.25" dia. size variant issued by Pep Comics in 1943, featuring classic image of The Shield bending metal beam w/ "Truth - Justice - Patriotism - Courage" code and "Shield G-Man Club" name at top. Glossy and Exc. Also comes w/.75x1-1/8" celluloid badge, featuring same image of The Shield. Exc. A must have for the Golden Age comic collector.
