Item Description
Although they utilize the same images from the famed T206 series, the Coupon Cigarettes issue is comprised of three distinct sets, released between 1910 and 1919. The first set, designated as Type I, was produced in 1910 and features AL, NL and Southern League ballplayers. Measuring 1-7/16x2-1/8", card backs from this Type I series notate "Coupon Mild Cigarettes" w/no mention of price and were distributed exclusively throughout the Louisiana area. Type I's were printed on especially thin paper stock and are considered to be the rarest and most desirable of the three different releases. Rube Marquard began his MLB career w/a single pitching appearance for the New York Giants during the final week of the 1908 baseball season. Rube would remain w/the Giants until 1915 when he moved on to Brooklyn in mid-season followed by a stop in Cincinnati before closing out his career with the Boston Braves in 1925. Marquard finished his career w/a record of 201-177 along with a very respectable career ERA of 3.08. Rube was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971. As mentioned previously, the Type 1 variety offered here is rare in itself w/PSA having only ever graded a total of five unsigned examples. What takes this card to an entirely different level, however, is the fact that it has been boldly signed by Rube. The PSA/DNA pop report indicates that this treasure is the only autographed card from the entire 1910 Coupon Cigarettes Type I series to have ever been encapsulated by PSA, making it a true 1 of 1.
