The Wipers were led by guitarist and songwriter Greg Sage forming in Portland, OR in 1977. The punk rock trio helped pave the way for the grunge sound that would emerge in the following decade. Their 1980s heyday is now considered punk canon. The band's influence on Cobain can not be overstated, he notably listed Wipers records Is This Real?, Youth of America and Over The Edge on his top 50 albums list. Cobain speaking of Sage noted "He was pretty much the romantic, quiet, visionary kind of guy. What more can I say about them? They started Seattle grunge rock in Portland, 1977."
