Item Description
This ring is closely related to the lighted face Howdy Doody premium ring from Palmolive issued c. 1950 but for some reason is infinitely rarer than the Howdy version w/few known to exist of Clarabell. In addition, the applied paint used to transform the head from the Howdy look into the Clarabell look easily chipped away w/any use at all and this is the one example we know of with NM paint. From a construction viewpoint, this ring is identical to Howdy except on Clarabell's head is mounted a small brass hat. The ring base, as on Howdy, shows two images of Clarabell with his elaborate collar and a brass loop to hold a battery with maker's name of "Brownie Mfg. Co." along with "Pat. No. 2, 516, 180." This patent for "Finger Ring With Flashlight Adjustment" was filed in 1948 and granted July 25, 1950 to Meyer M. Brown (we presume the owner of Brownie Mfg. Co). The ring comes w/a battery and Clarabell's face is to light up or made to blink on and off by moving the contact wire on and off of the battery terminal. However ring is not working and probably needs a new battery. The ring base has clean brass luster. NM. One of the Holy Grails of premium ring collecting and best condition example we've seen of the four or five known to exist. The last example we were able to offer happened to be this very same ring back in 2015 and it sold for $2,300. Robert M. Overstreet Ring Collection.
