Item Description
16x25.5" thin paper. In 1815 as a General, Jackson allowed the execution of six militia men after a court martial for disobeying orders. Newspapers in support of John Adams seized on this incident during the 1828 campaign creating several varieties of posters and handbills portraying Jackson as a murderer. Moderate edge wear, most notably a 2" horizontal tear along left edge just below the top row of coffins. Otherwise moderate age toning and handling wear. VG. This example is two sided and is the largest of the several different broadsides and handbills produced. This and its counterparts were distributed widely and are considered the first mass political smear campaign. Rex & Patti Stark Collection.
