Item Description
Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) coined his trademark phrase "The The Guy ..." around 1910 during his early years as the iconic American cartoonist of the 20th century. This series of tobacco company sponsored slogan buttons followed in 1912 along with his collaboration with singer Billy Murray on the hit comedy song "I'm The Guy" on Edison records. Each is 7/8" and 134 of 153 have their back paper. The brand "Obak" predominates but also included are papers naming Perfection, Chesterfield, Favorite, Clix , Red Lion Plug and several others. Of the nine green background, one has .25" cello flake off edge, of the 73 red background, 12 have degree of age stain and one has cello crazing, of the 71 blue background 6 have some age and 1 has cello craze. While 152 buttons are the typical cello covered, the final blue button in our photo is litho tin, a rarity we've never seen before and a historical precursor to the millions of Red Cross and Liberty Loan buttons that appeared by J. L. Lynch when America entered WWI. About 70% are Exc to NM. An outstanding collection, one of very few of this size.
