Item Description
1-5/8x2-7/16". Possibly the rarest of the 1940's Cuban card issues is this caramel card series depicting members of the island's four team professional winter league. Cards are printed on thick paper stock with black and white images on front surrounded by black borders with no player identification. Horizontal back displays card number, player name, very brief player info along with a sponsor ad appearing at bottom. Many American players, including Negro Leaguers, are included in the set. As is the case with many Cuban baseball issues of the era, an album was issued with these cards, making it very difficult to find surviving examples in any grade higher than VG.

Hank Thompson began his professional baseball career with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League, starring for a team that also included trailblazers, Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige. Subsequently, Thompson would follow Jackie's MLB path, signing with the Cleveland Indians and making his MLB debut in 1947. Hank would experience his greatest MLB success beginning in 1949 with the New York Giants as a third baseman and outfielder.
