Item Description
A classic Washington design featuring his bold initials at center of 1-5/16" (34mm) thin flan clothing button issued as Albert GW11A and DeWitt/Sullivan as GW1789-7. Of three styles, this has the large "GW" initials at center on a stippled oval positioned closest together of the three. Surrounding the oval in a semi-circular stippled channel is the motto "Long Live The President." This example was once silvered copper (rather than brass) but the only traces of the thin silver flashing remaining (which is still more than typical) is .25" dia. area surrounding the reverse shank. The oval shank is original, but pushed a tiny bit to one side. One end of the ring has a tiny break on the underside where it joins the original solder, but it's opposing end remains firmly soldered in place. The overall tone of the copper metal is dark chocolate brown. The "GW" shows in any light. The lack of contrasting color makes the slogan hard to read in flat light, but easily readable in light striking the surface at an angle. A Fine+ example in its unpolished state of finish after 219 years. GW inaugurals have been much in demand in the last couple of years as numismatists join the marketplace formerly the realm of campaign and clothing button collectors.
